Santa Teresa Staircase

Jorge Selarón (Chile, 1947) is a self-taught painter and ceramist Chilean rooted in Brazil. He is the author of a work and living color mutant that the Lapa and Santa Teresa.

His biggest and best known work is on the staircase of the Convent of Santa Teresa, in Rio de Janeiro, which had its 215 steps and 125 meters decorated with more than two thousand different tiles, from more than 60 countries, giving a tone with the Brazilian colors of the flag. According to the artist, was only able to pursue his great work painting and selling more of 25 thousand pictures, almost always with a theme motivated by a personal problem, "pregnant women".

The famous staircase have already run the world, sometimes as the main theme for reports from magazines and TV programs around the world, now serving as back scene for video clips, advertising campaigns and even to pictures of a U.S. edition of Playboy.

In May 2005 the staircase was declared public asset by the mayor of the city and Selarón received the title of honorary citizen of Rio de Janeiro. The staircase, which is also known as “Selarón Steps”, is located at end of Teotônio Regadas St., Lapa, Rio de Janeiro.
